Sibi Joseph, the father of Anna Sebastian Perayil, has confirmed that the family will not pursue legal action against EY Global. Perayil, a 26-year-old Chartered Accountant at S R Batliboi, an EY affiliate in Yerawada, Pune, passed away on July 21 due to what is reported as “work-related stress.”
Family Decision and Background
Sibi Joseph announced the decision to forgo legal proceedings despite claims from Perayil’s mother that her daughter’s death was due to excessive workload and stress. Joseph explained that while his daughter experienced severe work pressure, the family prefers to focus on ensuring such issues do not affect others in the future rather than pursuing legal action.
“Anna was very active and engaged in regular physical activities like badminton and jogging,” Joseph shared. “She often worked late into the night, sometimes until 12:30 am, and faced difficulties with sleep and food due to her demanding schedule.”
Government and Public Response
Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje, has promised a thorough investigation into the work conditions at EY. “We are deeply saddened by Anna Sebastian Perayil’s tragic loss. A detailed probe into the claims of an unsafe work environment is underway,” Karandlaje stated on social media.
The investigation follows a request from BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who called for an examination of the working conditions that contributed to Perayil’s death.
Company’s Statement
EY India has denied any connection between work pressure and Perayil’s death. Rajiv Memani, Chairman of EY India, stated, “Anna worked with us for only four months, and we do not believe that work pressure was a factor in her passing. We have extended our support to her family during this difficult time.”
The company issued a formal statement expressing condolences and reaffirming its commitment to supporting employees and their families during distressing times. “Anna’s promising career was tragically cut short. We continue to provide all necessary assistance to her family,” Memani added.
Conclusion
The case underscores the importance of addressing workplace stress and ensuring supportive work environments. While legal action will not be pursued, the focus remains on improving conditions to prevent future tragedies.
