A devastating fire erupted at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi on the night of November 15, 2024, tragically claiming the lives of 10 newborns. 16 infants remain in critical condition, while 37 others were rescued from the blaze.
In response, the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a comprehensive three-tier investigation into the incident. The Divisional Commissioner of Jhansi and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) have been tasked with submitting a report within 24 hours. The Fire Department will also lead an inquiry, alongside a magisterial investigation to uncover the cause of the fire in the NICU.
The U.P. government has announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased children. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to each of the grieving families.
