A fresh political clash erupted after BJP leader Amit Malviya accused Rahul Gandhi of staging “drama” during his Punjab visit to flood-affected areas. The controversy deepened after a video surfaced showing the Leader of Opposition arguing with Punjab Police officers who prevented him from crossing the Ravi river into a flood-hit border village.
Amit Malviya Slams Rahul Gandhi
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Malviya alleged that Gandhi’s visit was more about “tantrums” than relief.
“After yet another secret holiday in Langkawi, Rahul Gandhi landed in Punjab to stage drama. The pretext: meeting flood victims. The reality: throwing tantrums at Punjab Police and insisting on entering dangerous areas despite security risks,” Malviya wrote.
He further claimed that a “responsible leader” would have consoled victims, supported rescue operations, and assisted the administration instead of creating disruption.
Congress Accuses Punjab Police of Stopping Gandhi
On Monday, Gandhi visited Ghonewal village in Amritsar and Gurchak village in Gurdaspur, but was stopped from going to Toor village, located across the Ravi river.
Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said the police cited “serious security reasons” for restricting Gandhi’s movement. Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi also criticized the state government, saying Gandhi only wanted to meet villagers and check on their well-being.
Rahul Gandhi’s Heated Exchange With Police
In a widely circulated video, Gandhi is seen questioning police officials:
“You are telling me you cannot keep me safe on Indian territory? That is what you are saying.”
When the officer assured him of protection, Gandhi pointed across the Ravi river and asked:
“But you are saying that is India, and you cannot protect me in India? Is it not India?”
He further added, “You want to say that the Leader of Opposition cannot go because Punjab Police is unable to protect?”
Political Battle Intensifies
The spat has added fuel to the ongoing war of words between BJP and Congress. While BJP leaders call Gandhi’s actions “irresponsible and disruptive,” Congress leaders maintain he was only trying to meet his people in flood-affected areas.
