Uttar Pradesh as a Theme State at Surajkund International Crafts Mela
Faridabad: The state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) is presenting its rich culture, heritage, art, and spiritual traditions at the ongoing Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad. UP is one of the theme states this year, alongside the northeastern state of Meghalaya.
Grand Pavilion Reflects UP’s Cultural Diversity
Uttar Pradesh has built a magnificent pavilion at the Mela, decorated in traditional architectural styles. The structure blends artistic paintings, cultural designs, and modern technology, giving visitors an immersive experience of the state’s heritage.
The pavilion’s main attractions include statues of Lord Ram and Gautam Buddha, representing the spiritual and historical identity of Uttar Pradesh. These statues are drawing large crowds and creating a sense of reverence among visitors.
Deepika Singh, Regional Officer with Uttar Pradesh Tourism, said, “Being a theme state at Surajkund is a great opportunity. UP is presenting its culture, heritage, and art on a large scale, with spiritual heritage depicted through statues of Lord Ram and Gautam Buddha.”
Showcasing Handicrafts and Local Artistry
While it was not possible to bring products from all 75 districts of UP, selected handicrafts highlight the state’s craftsmanship, including:
-
Brass utensils from Moradabad
-
Glassworks from Firozabad
-
Carpets from Bhadohi
These products also reflect the spirit of self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
Additionally, LED displays at the pavilion showcase major tourist destinations such as Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Mathura, Vrindavan, and Bundelkhand, encouraging visitors to plan trips to UP.
Special Gates and Stalls Enhance Visitor Experience
The pavilion features five special gates — Ayodhya Gate, Prayagraj Gate, Kashi Gate, Bundelkhand Gate, and Uttar Pradesh Gate — representing the state’s historical and religious heritage. Around 40 stalls offer handicrafts, local foods, and souvenirs.
Visitors also enjoy several selfie points, including Sudarshan Chakra, the conch, and ‘I Love UP’, which have become very popular.
Visitor Reactions
Renu, a visitor from Delhi, said, “Seeing the statue of Lord Ram brought peace to my mind.” Another visitor, Rajkumari, added, “It felt as if I was touring Uttar Pradesh myself.”

The Surajkund Mela, which began on January 31, will continue until February 15. The fair hosts more than 50 countries, with Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya as theme states and Egypt as the partner country.
